I made it myself - WIWW

17 July 2013

I thought Id share another little WIWW post today....
and share a dress I made myself.

The idea came to mind following my love of Trixie on the The Block Sky High....
My family weren't always fans of her smock / tunic style dresses....but I was.
I loved them...
I loved that they looked comfy and that she wore lots of vintage fabric as well.
So I began the search for a similar pattern ....I wanted to attempt one myself.

The closest pattern I could find was this one...
Simplicity 2147

So I gave it a test run and whipped up this one...
It worked..and I was pretty chuffed with it....

Then.... the most exciting thing happened...
Janelle and I were talking...
and she told me about Theresa and her store "Rummage Style"
I have no idea which rock I had been under....
but I was smitten by this handmade clothing...all created lovingly by Theresa from upcycled vintage linen.
So much nicer than anything I could make myself..

So I chose a style of dress....
and Janelle very very kindly popped a beautiful yellow sheet in the post to Theresa ..
so that I could have it made into a long sleeve dress.

...and here it is!!!
Mine is the one in the middle....
I'm stalking the postie daily waiting for it to arrive....

But....in the meantime....
I whipped up another dress using my pattern....and I have to say...
I like it...and I've worn it a few times already...
(please excuse the creases....I had worn it all day before I took these pics)

Dress- made it myself
Leggings - Kmart....cheap and incredibly comfy
Cardi - Temt
Necklace - Dandelyne

I hope my Rummage style dress arrives soon.

    1. I agree Lea... there is plenty of room in there for a nice big lunch. I also love that I can put some beautiful old fabrics to good use.

  10. I do so hope you see this and respond:
I have been reading reviews of Simplicity 2147 and many sewists comment that the dress is somewhat barrel shaped, but yours does not look so. Did you make any modifications to the pattern?

    1. Hi Debbi.... No I made no modifications (I just jumped up and checked my pattern pieces to make sure..as I do alter things if I think they need a tweek).
It is a very loose and generous fit although I have never thought of it as barrel shaped... to me it is what a tunic type top is supposed to fit like.
I have enjoyed the clothing I've made using the pattern to date and I currently have a longer version sitting on my sewing table waiting to be sewn.
I hope this has helped your decision....

  11. thanks x 1,000,000 for answering! And yes - I think I'm going to go for it and make one. Those wedding photos - oh my goodness - beautiful! And I'm asking Santa to bring me a Rummage dress. I actually found your blog thru a pinterest search for "tunic pattern" which brought up the 2147 photo. The outfit looked so much like my daily school uniform of dress, cardigan, tights and flats or boots that I had to check out the source...so glad I did!! Have an awesome day.

    1. Good luck with your top Debbi.....I hope you are happy with it. I made a longer version yesterday to wear as a dress...to be honest...as a dress it feel too oversized and boxy....so I am going to shorten it to a top again...the pattern makes much better tops that dresses in my opinion.... well unless I wore a belt I guess.
Thank you for the lovely comment about my blog... bless pinterest!!
Oh and I hope you get your Rummage Style dress....they are gorgeous!!
      Have a wonderful week...Mardi x
